The snow-capped mountain tops glistened in the pale moonlight. Each particle of the fluffy white stuff reflected a different shade of blue or purple, creating a beautiful sight. The land was dotted with the intertwined tracks of several different animals. Amorin's paws studded the ground, adding to the intricate swirls of life that covered the ground beneath him. The cold air whipped over his fur as he trotted around like a fresh-born pup. The snow was his element. His nose plunged into the snow, and he flipped the sparkling dust into the sky above him. He frolicked through the icy air, not a worry in the world.
It wasn't often one could find the alpha of the Martyr park off the lands. An ever rarer occasion? Amorin forgetting he was 5 years old. If it weren't for his size, one just might think he was still just two months old, experiencing snow for the first time. He howled excitedly before tuning on his back and wiggling. A chuckle escaped his throat. How long had it been since he had last had fun? A month? Six months? Over a year? Whatever the answer, it had been too long. He snorted at slight disgust in himself. He needed to get out more often on more than just pack matters. I mean, hey, Amorin enjoyed his alone time just as much as the next wolf, and with the effort he put into his duties, he deserved it.

To those who knew Nalia well, they knew that whenever it snowed, she seemed to disappear. Her thick, black pelt made it hard for her to tolerate the heat, but was perfect enough to deal with the cold weather. Indeed, the icy wind merely tugged on her coal pelt, and although her nose was cold, she was content. Her sapphire eyes took in her surroundings, tail twitching slightly. The purples and blues of the mountain were beautiful, a beauty unmatched by anything else. Sure, spring and summer were beautiful in their own ways too. Flowers were a secret pleasure of hers, though she definitely wasn't fond of the heat that went along with it. But it was here, in the winter, that she truly felt at ease. Even in among her packmates, she was slightly awkward. It wasn’t that she didn’t care, it was just hard for her to remove her detached, cool personality.
The Alphess sighed, her breath showing up in the icy air. Nalia wasn’t one to lie to anyone, especially herself. She knew that she took things way too seriously, and that sometimes she could be cynical. It was when it was times like these did she escape from the packlands. The pack was well protected, she reasoned, and would survive a couple hours without her. That, and she noticed that a certain Alpha had vanished and, curious as ever, she wanted to find him. It was pure coincidence that she happened upon him, romping in the snow like a youngling. For a minute, she didn’t move, her blue eyes unreadable. Then, the normally stoic wolf gave a little snort of laughter, eyes sparkling with humour.
“You look like you’re having fun.” she remarked, ear flicking slightly in amusement.

“You look like you’re having fun.” The voice, obviously a females, made the fur along his spine prickle. How could anyone had known that he was up in the mountains. His body began tensing, cautious about the wolfess behind him. Just as Amorin was about to turn, teeth bared, a soft wind caused her scent to swim by his nose. Nalia.
He dropped his tail and ears, craning his neck around in a shy manor. "Oh," he spoke, words soft and bashful, {b]"I-uh-didn't know you were here."

His body swiveled to face her completely before his rump planted itself in the snowy earth. "What're you doing here? Shouldn't you be watching your-er my?-uhm, our pack?" A look of slight discomfort washed over his face, and he shifted his paws uncertainly. He never had much contact with the alphess, even though they ruled over a pack together. He spent most of his time doing the job opposite of her. To tell the complete truth, he didn't know much about her at all, an unfortunate thing that needed to be worked on. His tongue flicked over his chops and he stared at her, fully taking in her image for the first time in a while. Twinkling sapphire eyes caught and held his gaze. Several seconds passed before he realized the awkward stare he was holding. A grumble ripped at his stomach, only making the moment slightly more uncomfortable. "Oh, and about that whole," he cleared his throat. "About that! It never happened, alright?[/div] [atrb=width,100] words ,

She hadn't meant to startle him. Actually, she hadn't meant to speak at all. She blinked slightly in surprise, then shrugged. She hand't done anything wrong, after all. Nalia did feel bad for startling him, though, and ducked her head in apology. She came closer, dark fur standing out in the white oasis, the wind tugging at her fur, letting her catch a whiff of Amorin's scent. It was a comforting scent, one she had come to trust.
Nalia snorted slightly at his question. "They can take care of themselves for a little while. I needed to get out." she said, her soft voice still amused. Nalia found it slightly amusing that he was so bashful. Everyone needed a break sometimes. Sure, it had been rather surprising to find the Alpha floundering in the snow like a pup, but Nalia didn't see anything wrong with it. Nalia didn't often let herself goof off, mostly because she had been raised so seriously. It was hard for her to let go sometimes, even though she really wished she could.
The Alphess studied the Alpha, blue eyes meeting his. Nalia didn't know Amorin very well, partially because of her own personality, partially because of the circumstances. They ruled the back together, true. But they weren't true mates. Nalia had been surprise when she was chosen to rule along side him, especially since that had been her mother's wish. His words brought her out of her thoughts, and all of a sudden, a mischievous look came into her eyes. "About what?" she asked innocently. Then, moving quickly, she buried her nose in the snow and, with a hard flick, shoved snow at him. She danced away, tail wagging in amusement, ears flicked up. "I didn't see anything." she said with a grin.

A glint in Nalia's eye made Amorin crouch in suspicion. He began eying her as she spoke. "About what?" The skin above his eye raised, much like the eyebrow on a human. In the same instant, snow was flung hard towards his face. He snorted and blinked in surprise. Shaking his head, he leaped after her. "I didn't see anything." A laugh escaped is throat. So she was playing this game? Well, he could, too.
His body lowered to the ground, tail flailing like a pup's. You're about to see this!" he yelled just as he sprang. Twisting in the air, he landed in the snow right in front of her, hind facing her face. Hind paws kicked snow at the Alphess, and a loud, earthy laugh flowed out of Amorin's chest. His tail and head raised high in unison, making his already large frame look taller.
He hadn't had the chance to get away from the pack for quite some time, and to be frolicking through the snow with another wolf was something he wouldn't have imagined himself doing for the rest of his life. Yeah, it was fun, but that just wasn't him. Amorin felt silly, but he drank up the feeling like he was dieing of thirst.
His body circled around hers, tail flicking in contentment. Oh the joy of having fun.

Nalia's eyes twinkled as he crouched, and the suspicion made her tail wag. Oh yes, two could play this game. When the snow hit him, his reaction was comical enough for the normally stoic wolf to wag her tail furiously. The black female snorted and danced in place, eyes sparkling with amusement. Amorin hadn't seen it coming, making her victory complete. She let out a bark of laughter as he leaped after her, and she made a move to dance away. "Oh no you don't!" the she-wolf said, trying to get out of the way fast enough.
Unfortunately, it didn't work out the way she planned. It was like a mini snow explosion, sending the white stuff everywhere. She coughed and sputtered, snow clumping to her black fur. She shook her fur, snow going everywhere. "You are going to regret that!" she said, voice full of promise. Burying her face in the snow, Nalia chucked some more at him. At the same time, she leaped at him, aiming to tackle him in the snow. She was significantly smaller than the Alpha, but if she could catch him off guard, maybe she'd be able to push him into the snowbank.
Any other day, Nalia would've looked down upon this, snorted, and probably left. She felt a little bit foolish, but she shrugged it off. When she was a pup, she hadn't had a lot of time to do, well, pup-things. Instead, she was following her mother, trying to be perfect. This was a chance to let loose - to have fun. And she was definitely going to take it.

Amorin opened his mouth to shout something to the small alphess behind him. In the same instant, he crashed sideways into a very heavy snow bank, the force causing only an ohmf! to escape his lips. After a few seconds, a chuckle began filling the air. The sound was deep, but comforting. Laughing wasn't something that happened commonly when Amorin was around, and he was sure that it was the same for Nalia. These times just didn't call for fun and games; life was tough in this world. Regardless, Amorin enjoyed having the wolfess' company. Spending time with her was, surprisingly, relaxing. He rolled to his paws and trotted around the young female, the laugh still rumbling in his chest.
A warm feeling washed over the alpha, a feeling that he hadn't really remembered feeling since he and Lunis were pups. It was a moment of comfort, and it made his think oddly. Amorin's long, thick neck stretched out, and the top of his head made a notion to nuzzle the female's snout. His eyes closed for a moment as he drank in her scent. It wasn't new, by any means; he had shared a den with her for many moons. No, the scent wasn't a new one, but at this moment he experienced it in a different way. Warm, cozy, friendly. Trait's he hadn't considered Nalia to possess before then.
Though the previous moment had only lasted seconds, it had felt like hours before Amorin's true self snapped back in. His head pulled back and he began to cough-a defense mechanism he's had since he was little. Had he just shared an intimate moment with another wolf? That wasn't him. Amorin didn't like others that way. His eyes darted between the wolfess before him and the trail leading back home, contemplating on whether to run or stay and blow her off. His haunches tensed as he prepared for escape.

Success! She hadn't actually expected to get him to crash into the snowbank. She, after all, was a great deal smaller than Amorin, built more for speed than actually strength. Snow went everywhere, spraying the small Alphess, making her snort. She shook her black fur, eyes sparkling, spraying snow in all sorts of direction. "Who wins now?" she teased him, tail wagging. Nalia didn't often act like this, but it felt nice, and she grinned at him, breath making puffs in the air.
When he nuzzled her, she froze up, eyes going wide. Physical touch was rare for her, mostly because she hadn't been brought up like that. Affection was rare with her parents, though she had watched other pups get the friendly nudge. Nalia was unsure how to react, and stood there for a moment awkwardly, her mind scrambling. Then she relaxed and stopped over-thinking things, and nuzzled the underside of his neck. She always liked the way he smelled, and it comforted her. She felt safe around.
When he pulled away, Nalia looked at him sadly. Somehow, she felt like she had done something wrong. The black female looked at her paws, awkward. "I'm sorry... I know you don't like me..." she said quietly. With that she began to draw away, her shields coming back up, the rejection hurting more than Amorin could possibly ever know.

He shook his head violently, mane dancing in the moonlight. "Nalia? Don't like you? Don't kid yourself, you're a great friend and a great leader." He shifted uncomfortably, eyes studying her every movement. Amorin's voice lowered, and the space between his eyes wrinkled, "But you mean like...that. I've never liked anyone like that before. Not exactly sure how it feels." Pools of muddy ember shot from the wolfess to the ground.
Awkwardly, he took a step towards her and reached his nose out in an attempt to connect it with his alphess'. Perhaps he did feel some sort of connection with the beautiful she-wolf, other than just leadership. It began to click that she had nuzzled him back, and a leap of something-hope? happiness, perhaps?-flooded his stomach.
Amorin had never considered taking Nalia in as a mate. Heck, he never wanted to even have a mate. But here she was, a beautiful, young, strong shewolf standing before him.
And he thought he liked her.
His mind began reeling. Maybe he could propose the idea to her? He could suggest they do it just for the sake of the pack, or perhaps just to try it out. A look of joy poured into eyes. This could work, if she'd be willing to try.
A sickening thought caused the happiness to subside a bit: what if she rejected him? The pack could fall, and he could be overthrown. Or maybe she wouldn't want to rule anymore? The awkwardness he had felt only moments before stayed astray, but there was, within a matter of seconds, a change in his body language yet again.

No, that hadn't been what she meant. But since he went there, Nalia remained silent. What could she possibly say? She had fully believed that Amorin didn't like her at all. She was awkward around other wolves, and he didn't seem to talk to others very much. She didn't know how to talk to him. But far from hating him, she truly respected him. She thought he was a wonderful Alpha, and looked up. When he was around, she felt safe, and there was always a warmth in her heart around him. Finally, the black wolf said quietly, "I'm not either... Despite my empathy I..." she looked at him, then away, blue eyes almost ashamed. "I do like you, Amorin." she admitted, tail twitching slightly.
Nalia jumped in surprise when he reached out and touched noses with her. Blue eyes came up, searching his, wondering what he was thinking. That little touch made her stomach flutter, and warmth flooded her. It never happened with any other wolf, just him. Nalia loved being around him, though she wasn't sure if he felt the same, and that scared her. She didn't know what she would do if he rejected her. She cared about him, and being rejected by someone she cared about would be a blow that she wasn't sure she would recover from. Plus, Nalia didn't want to ruin the relationship they had made out for themselves. She didn't want to ruin anything.
Nalia looked at him, her cool voice uncertainly gentle. "What are you thinking about?" His emotions were flitting from one to another so fast she didn't know what to think. The Martyr Alphess didn't know what to make of this, and this put her in a very odd position. She didn't like surprises - ever. But this meeting with Amorin seemed like one huge surprise, and all she could do was sit back and watch. And wait, and see what would happen.
