Strong Till You Break Snow crunched under paw as the man made his way farther up his particular trail. He had chosen the scenic route, the route farthest from everyone else. The silence was a wonderful thing. The easy way he moved in it was perfection. Tensed muscles released as his mind came to recognize the fact that here on the snow and expanse of silence he had no one to pretend for.
The sigh that escaped him was one of utter relief. How he hated playing games with others. Montenegro lifted his tawny head to peer farther down his chosen path, ears pricked. Maybe, he conceded he should stop trying to be something else.
But it was how he was raised. Be silent. Be dismissive. Never let anyone close or even near enough to see you twitch. It was wrong and it would kill you in the end. He'd learned that lesson quickly enough. Refocusing on his steps the man slowed his pace, refusing to get back to the dens before he absolutely had to. Practically shuffling across the complaining snow. Cold air shifted across his shoulders, comforting in its embrace. Maybe he was just crazy.
He didn't want to be Montenegro. He himself had never been anything but a waste in the eyes of everything he stood before. It hurt and he was sick of it. So it was their fault then. Shame whispered at the back of his throat. How pathetic. Glancing around himself the boy shrugged farther into his cape of lies. The iced over deer path he was following merged slowly into a far more traveled lane, the snow became packed under his steps and with a whine of annoyance the man lengthened his strides again.
He refused to be seen moping in public.

How he had ended up in a frozen valley- in the middle of Spring, he had no idea. Ever since he began shifting against his will, sudden bouts of amnesia seemed to blind his thoughts of the past few hours. He remembered walking down a trodden path, tripping over a downed limb, and plunging headfirst into a pine tree. Sudden trama or episodes of fear always triggered that annoying and highly painful transformation.
He wasn't his morphed form, surprisingly. He had retrained his current form- from the looks of the large wolf prints in the snow around him. Had he walked in circles? Searching for something- or just having lost his mind for the time being? The thought intrigued him- leaving him flustered and without a clue. He couldn't tell what time of day it was- a thick gray cloud cover fell over the mountain tops- meshing with the snow covered pines. Pines- that were few and far between, there were maybe five pine trees within his line of sight- there wasn't even wind. So the snow packed so tightly beneath his blistered paws had probably been there for years- shrouding anything that might be able to have the life choked out of it.
This place was a Sepulcher for the silenced. He hand't been able to explore much since he came to this new land- but if there was any place he thought the dead would thrive- it would be here.
The male shivered- up ahead lay a well-trodded path, wider than the deer trail behind it; wider than- what was that? Something was moving just beyond the trail- a bear? It would make sense that a bear make his home up here- away from noise and the chance of being messed with. The male-wolf growled low in his throat- a warning growl, if they thing was bigger than he was he surely wouldn't have a fair chance in heaven.

Strong Till You Break A place for the dead. An apt description. Snow crusted sharp and cold against him, but the man found little hurt in it. It was a solace, that icy embrace. Something he could shroud himself in. A thing to hide him from the outer world, but alas such hiding dose not last long in the world of animals. Noses pick you up or ears track your every step. That snarl spooked him into a response that was befitting of a soldier.
Snapping around, hackles raising instantly the golden man arched up as tall as he would go. His body was not large, and he himself was not strong. If it came to a fight he would be toast or running like a mad man. Either way. Brown tipped ears sheathed tight against his skull, Montenegro snarled back at the creature shifting form the blinding whiteness into his view. It was wolf. Just a normal -larger then him- wolf. Its brown pelt warm against the backdrop of snow, Monte found his eyes roaming.
With a snap he pulled himself back to attention.
"You sir, are you Canopus?" It was spoken harshly, with the edge of disinterest. The question was merely a reason to speak, to draw himself away from the other. The twitching nostrils at his snout clearly told him the man was of his pack. Monte pulled back, legs still tight and rigid under his body. The over cast sky did not bod well in his mind and he would have liked to get to the den where he could at least die in an ice storm among fellows.
But he refused to turn his back on a -larger- animal he did not know. Did not trust. Then again their was no animal he trusted, not with his back anyway. Such things are best left to themselves. Slowly loosening his stiff posture the soldier boy kept at easy solute, eyes watching carefully. He wouldn't trust the -larger- man with his front either.

So it wasn't a bear- this eased his conscious to no extent. He hated the damned things- always starting trouble when other did not want them around. Just because they were large and lumbering did not mean they ran they place. They were slow and retarded, Taboo could easy outsmart one of them- even if he thought illogically most of the time.
Canopus? What was that? Some type of fruit? It sure sounded like a type of melon- a cantaloupe to be exact. No, he was not a fruit and he made it known. The scent of the other male finally wafted in his direction- Marytr, so he was brethren, why did he not know the members of his own pack yet? Why? Because he didn't pay attention- he preferred to be alone and spend his time gazing at stars or finding out ways to make his change happen.
He was slowly starting to accept what he was- and the world around him, it seemed most of the beings here at special powers; some of them not as obvious as others. The male before him- didn't show any visual signs, did he have one? Taboo titled his head to the side- sitting back on his haunches. The he-wolf chuckled, head shaking- imperial eyes almost playful. Now that he knew the other male shouldn't hurt him.
"Now, now brother I am not from a Cantaloupe. The wind was against me- I couldn't tell from where you descended or who you hailed- you looked like a mighty lumbering bear. I thought I was going to have to snap at your knees."

Strong Till You Break Montenegro twitched backward, unsure of how to respond to such a speech. He wasn't use to kindness in general and frankly he felt bad for not having met this pack mate before. Frowning deeply he nodded to the other's words, though unsure of why he used a fruit to describe the rival pack. "Yes, of course" He had known that this -larger- male had belonged to the Marytr's... but he had to be sure. If he had hesitated he could have been a spy. A danger. Monte was probably just too paranoid for his own good.
A bear? Despite himself the boy could not help but be slightly flattered. It was weird sure but it made him feel better. Montenegro had always had a problem with his small cut that normal stature. It was a thing pounded into his brain by horrible words spoken to him for years. Daddy didn't like tiny men. Suppressing the weak smile that had tugged up on his face the tawny male stepped closer to the brown. Loosening just a bit the fighter stood quietly watching for a moment as his hackles settled back into place.
"I apologies for my abrupt rudeness then." One could never be too careful. Montenegro had never held his nose so far up in the air to have lost the ability to apologize, and he did so now in good tastes. He had been a wee bit rude in his demands. Flicking his ears irritably at himself the soldier sat back slowly, resting on the balls of his feet not able to relax past that point. "Its good to meet a fellow pack mate, though. My name is Montenegro, may I ask for yours?" It was a question a quiet almost weak question. Monte was unsure of social interaction and had as a rule avoided it.
And now he couldn't even ask for a name without sounding terrified that he would be brushed aside like the fly he was.

Montenegro- what a unique name. Taboo didn't think he had ever heard of someone called that before. He wondered what it meant. Muscles relaxed along his spine- bunching around his tail as he took a seat again; ears twitching oddly atop his masculine skull. The other male seemed restless- or awkward one of the two. Taboo couldn't blame him- he felt about the same but was trying hard to make friends in this new place.
A little idle chatter sounded good to him- hopefully he didn't run off on one of his long speeches like usual; he always ended up asking too many questions or talking too much- running someone off for all the wrong reasons. He also had a tendency to talk fast when he was nervous. Imperial eyes watched lazily as Montenegro stepped closer- closing the void between them. The wind still didn't blow, which scared the wolf a little. Where he came from, if the wind didn't blow it was a sign that bad weather was on the way.
"Montenegro! It's a pleasure, brother. Mind if I call you Monte? It's not so much a mouthful- my name is Taboo, but you can call me Tab- or whatever other name pops into mind..." He trailed off- chewing his tongue. Yeah, words like 'rodent', or 'hare'. He hated the terms though he preferred the first over the second any day. He dared to try his hand at awkward conversation again, "So what has you roaming these desolate lands? Boredom? Hunting? Tracker? I'm still not sure of the pack's ranks- below that of a Beta, that is..."
Taboo cleared his throat- his voice had come out a little faster than he had wanted- ah well things happened, he needed to work on his people skills.

Strong Till You Break The man jolted in surprise at the sudden spout of language. Half of him had been prepared to simply turn away when the brute strode off, but that wasn't the case. Had he just given Montenegro a nick name? Unable to do much more then nod, the tawny male gave consent to the shortening of his obnoxiously long name. A nick name? Monte couldn't stop the small smile that perked up the corners of his normally somber mouth. It was so odd, so far from the norm to have a complete stranger suddenly provide him with a term of endearment his very mother hadn't given him. Whatever the reason behind it Montenegro was beyond happy to accept it.
"Taboo? Tab then" he mused. A small giggle escaped him, he was unable to stop the feminine sound before it had left his maw. Clenching his teeth around it the man glanced away for a second off put by the noise he had just made. Jesus what was wrong with him? Oh that's right awkward first social interaction in weeks. And look at how easily he turned himself into an odd ball. "Uh, well." He paused, half of him wanting to tell the truth and the other half not wanting to look like a complete freak in front of a pack member.
"Boredom" he picked out the word first supplied, because it had in essence been true. He had no friends in the pack, and held no want for any. Or so he told himself. Frankly he didn't put forward any effort to meet his pack mates, and those such efforts at ex-communication led to awkward meetings with large hansom min on the road. The small smile on his face twitched. This guy wasn't all that hansom, just look at how bulky he was. Monte looked away from the new male, staring over his shoulder for a long moment before looking up to the sky.
"It looks horrid up there" he decided, resting anxious green eyes on the other.

Taboo nodded- finding no problem in the shortened name, for either of them. He was all for being lazy- and having to remember the name Montenegro did not seem lazy at all. Imperial eyes followed Monte's upwards, yes it was dreadful looking- the thick menecing clouds could be seen from the valley below. This place was barren- almost like a desert- except it felt like the only living creatures were the two wolves here.
The brown wolf couldn't help the smile that spread upon his face- he had made someone giggle, for the first time in months he had brought someone some kind of joy for whatever reason that had been. He had managed to pull them away from their 'boredom' just long enough to maybe jump start something in their mind.
Tab felt awkward- but it seemed he didn't feel as awkward as the male in front of him, therefor he felt the responsibility to continue the conversation- delving deeper in to the male's business. If he went to far- he was sure he would get a firm lashing of the tongue, at least he hoped so!
Curiosity sparked in his eyes, the new few words sounding childish- like Monte's laugh had sounded like it came from a goddess. "Do you think anything lives up here? Want to explore?" He suddenly bent low- barking playfully at the other male- tail wagging happily behind him as if he were a pup again, No use sitting around acting awkward forever- someone needed to break the ice, and what better way to get to know each other than an even awkward trail hike- talking about completely oblivious things?

Strong Till You Break Monte jumped in shock, literally hopping to his paws. Eyes narrowed in confusion the man skipped sideways, not at all sure of how to respond to such an open welcome. After a moment of blank staring he finally relented to a rather large smile. Where had this man been a year ago when he had needed a good friend above all else?
Slumping his head out of amusement the man turned bright round eyes on Tab."Why not?" the words came out as a laugh, bright and chiming. He was just as childish as anyone else under his exterior, and the openness provided to him had become an outlet. The golden boy skipped around his new found acquaintance, eyes turning to the snow coated expanses of Everwhite pass.
There where trees here, so something had to live here. Or at least have lived here. Maybe some time in the past the snow had melted at some point in the year, and opened the way from an ecosystem to thrive. But then the winter conditions provided its own thriving ecology. "Of course there is stuff alive up here." Montenegro offered a weak unsure tail wag, the tawny appendage waving slowly behind him. "I mean there has got to be something here. Us for example.
A fay grin pulled across his features, the Monte underneath leaking out onto the icy exterior. Playing was a thing he had not had even in childhood and the essence of it now was exciting, exhilarating. The man's lips pulled into a warmer smile. Turning slightly, to pad farther up the trail the boy dropped his nose, snuffling in the white powder. There had to be tracks around her somewhere right? What the hell were they even doing? Monte laughing into the ground, the sound muffled by the hard pack snow.

Now that was something Taboo had no been expecting- the male all of a sudden became very friendly- very playful. Taboo had thought Monte was just going to shrug it off and continue being awkward but something had sparked to live inside him and it was a little refreshing. The brown wolf bounded after his packmate- falling into line behind the smaller male, dropping his nose to the cool powder.
Taboo loved the snow- loved everything about it, it was easy to clean off, got your attention with it's intensely bright color, felt amazing on a hot summer day, you could leave paw prints EVERYWHERE, and hide stuff easier. Plus, if you hid food beneath it, sometimes it preserved until the next season, which was all cool incase you forgot about where you had buried your dinner. There were so many things one could do with snow.
The young male stuck out his tongue- testing the taste of the marshmallow colored flakes, all so neatly packed together. He wondered- if snow was alive, what would the flakes be saying to one another. Would they be bullying each other and trying to push each other away- or would they be coaxing each other to come nearer? Baby making snowflakes! The idea brought a smile to his face.
He dug the tip of his leathery nose into the snow before quickly lifting his head- sending the snow flying onto Monte's back. He watched as it fell down in clumps, laying out of place on the tightly packed stuff beneath their feet. Oh no, he had disorganized nature!
What were they doing anyway? Running around like pups? They were grown men, in a pack that no doubtably needed something- they could at least be doing something helpful up here- ah but they were. They were searching for something alive, something to possibly take back home? Something a fellow packmate could sink their teeth into with no problem- no hassle, no need to get out of bed and climb the long track up the mountainside. There was a deer trail- where were the deer?
After a few awkward moments- Taboo paused in his tracks, sniffing at the limb of a pine tree sticking up from beneath the snow. "Well, here is a limb- with some green still on it. Do you think the snow covers up the trees? That is snows so horrid up here over night-." He didn't like the idea. If there was going to be heavy snow overnight- he really did not want to be caught up here unknowingly.

Strong Till You Break Green eyes bright and watching, Monte couldn't help but make a face when his fellow's tongue sunk into the white drifts."Isn't that cold?" he snorted, head lifting slightly to stick out his own tongue. The tough pads of his paws tingled against the touch of snow, and surly the reach of the ice crystals against Tab's sensitive tongue hurt? Monte's head tilted before lifting again. Turning around, his back to the rooting timber, the boy stared out across the expanse of white before him. Ah there!
About to call out the sudden weight and cold of snow slung across his shoulders startled a yelp from him. It's white layers cascaded from his tawny back when he turned, the motion fast and loud. Eyes incredilouse the man fought to not laugh as he puffed at the larger. "You little bugger, its cold!" Whatever harshness was in his voice was a total lie, and stretched too thin over his amusement. The white rain falling from his back didn't bother him in the least. How long had it been sense he had had another to play with.
Even if they were grown men they were still young. And Montenegro had never played much as a child. This small game lifted his spirits considerably. Or maybe that was the company of a rather handsome kind man. Catching one golden paw under the surface Monte slung a spout of snow all his own with as much power as he could muster. Playfulness and a fair amount of joy glowed in his eyes. Skipping out of range for a moment the man turned his eyes to the trail, watching it with weak scrutiny.
He had come out here early and made two trips back with a rabbit each but other then that had seen no prey. This snow was to blame, running over its beauty was harder for he then the prey. But really he couldn't blame the snow, he had to find prey to run after first. Monte's sense of duty twitched under the stare, and with a sigh he turned back to Taboo ears catching the timber's sentence as he moved back over.
The trees... burred? That was a really odd thing to think about. Green eyes turned from the pine branch to the snow littered ground uneasily. It was beyond worrying to think a forest of trees lay under the snow, just waiting for the patch that was too thin and that wolf that was too heavy... Shuddering, the man lifted his eyes again, resting them on Taboo's chocolate face. "Yeah, it gets pretty bad sometimes" He'd tried to wander up here a few days before in the dark. It hadn't been a good plan.
Head tipped slightly to the side the boy shrugged, stepping back along the trail. They could always move farther along it and see if there was anything for anyone to eat. Monte's face slipped from its playful openness to a harder dutiful mask. There was still hunting to be had, and even if he did enjoy playing around with Taboo there was a pack to be cared for. Montenegro had long ago come to the conclusion that he came last, and that thought process kicked in now. "There are some tracks up that way, I think. His head tipped towards Taboo, eyes squinting into the bright reflective snow.

A man's age is something impressive, it sums up his life: maturity reached slowly and against many obstacles, illnesses cured, griefs and despairs overcome, and unconscious risks taken; maturity formed through so many desires, hopes, regrets, forgotten things, loves. A man's age represents a fine cargo of experiences and memories- but when one is still young at heart? Why shouldn't he play?
So many people say that you won’t amount to anything, you won’t make it, you won’t succeed- unless you’re on your own. But those people forget the heroes standing behind them- the unsung warriors- the brave fighters and peacemakers- who make life what it is. These people are friends, compadres, amigos, amis and even the chums- add the vibrancy and color to this world that is otherwise a monotone black and white. These people- who no matter what is wrong and what they are doing, support you every step of the way and hold you up when you’re falling.
Everyone should have a friend to call their own- and Tab hoped he would find one in Montenegro. The male had been so awkward at first- unsure, but as soon as Taboo had made note that he wasn't going to harm him, he had come alive- like someone had poured water on a flower. It was a beautiful thing- the prospect of having a friend. "I know it's cold!
The brute's laugh as loud- cheerful, just before snow was flung his face! He gasped and shook the cold power from his nose and eyes- a shiver running up his spine. "Good aim, Sir. Good aim!" The wolf trotted, seemed like it would be a word to describe his mood, along behind Monte- snipping at his tail. Tracks meant deer, deer meant a hunt, hunt meant fun, and then the prospect of food.
Taboo lifted his nose and smelled the air- it was crisp and clean; too clean. "Do you think we should bring anything back to Alphess Nalia? She might praise us if we bring the others a kill. I am not sure how long it will take us to drag it down the mountain though- if they are still about..."
He trailed off, he wanted to ask the male if he had any family- a little idle chit-chat didn't seem like a bad idea as long as they kept quiet and made sure they stayed against the wind.
