The Alphess of the Canopus Pack sauntered through the snow idly. It was a pleasant day, the sun was shining and the clouds had gone away. It was only temporary, but Fiametta was enjoying it while it was there. Her midnight colored fur stuck out like a sore thumb against the white terrain of her territory and she was aware of the fact that she was vulnerable to enemies because of this. However, she was confident in her abilities to fight and protect those she loved, including herself. There was no way she would lose to anyone.
Her venetian blue eyes scanned the glaciers before her, which were reflecting the light of the sun brightly. She walked through the snow some more to where she was in the shade of one of the glaciers, but still able to look down at them. She found a flat stone and climbed upon it, laying herself down to relax. She'd had a pretty rough path for the last several months since she had taken the position of Alphess, especially being hard because she had no mate, no Alpha, to help her run the pack. She was alone, but only in that rank part of life. She had her betas, her fighters, and her protectors. No Alpha, though, and she found that strange.
With the way her life was before she came to this pack, males were always the rulers of the pack. Females had no say in anything. It was definitely different than what she had grown up learning, but it was nice almost. She wasn't mean to any of her packmates and she loved each and every one of them, talents included. To her, it certainly didn't matter how strong her pack was, but how well they worked together. When strength in a pack was lacking, teamwork made up for it. To her, teamwork was the single thing that made a pack truly strong.
Fiametta sighed, breath revealed in a puff of mist from her mouth, and hung her head when she rested it on the edge of the stone. She looked down at the glacier just beneath her, staring into the eyes of her reflection. The ice was smooth and unbroken, perfect in a sense. It was almost as if she was looking at another wolf who happened to look exactly like her. She laughed at the thought, turning her glance to the cloudless, sunny sky.

Show Me A Smile Baby
His body moved slowly, tranquilly across the white expanse. Steps came with the sharp crisp of hardened snow. He had come out this way in the search for food. Frankly it had been a vane search in the white drifting lands. Having found himself drawn closer to the ice around him Reiko lifted his head to watch. Light glittered in beautiful rivulets inside the frozen behemoth. A patchwork of blues pinks and whites shimmered and shifted before his awed eyes.
There was nothing more amazing then ice, in his onion. Something so versatile and so pretty. Brown tail wagging slowly behind his large form, Reiko set himself to moving farther along the winding ice shield. Life was better now, under the warmth of the snow. No matter how odd and paradoxical it was it was true. The man smiled, warm chocolate face tilting to watch the spattering light to his side.
The sharp ridges of ice cascaded farther away, dirt and frozen ground catching the rims of the monster ice cube and pressed it farther away. With ever step it drew to his right and brought his head higher to a rift of pink struck through it's bottom center line. His breath clouded his vision as he drew closer to it, leaning forwards to peer into its crystallized depths. Such perfection caught in time forever.
His eyes warmed, caressing the solid substance as they shifted. It truly was beautiful. Reiko turned those pumpkin eyes around, suddenly aware of a scent that had been hanging in the air for some time. He had dismissed it early on the basis of familiarity, but now it was too close. As a loner he had become wary despite his good intentions. Placing large paws carefully now, the brown hooded man took the last tentative steps to the sight of a truly familiar woman.
Any form of tenseness ran from him like water slipping from a duck. "Hello, Madam" his voice curled up in its normal warm tunes hanging in the air with welcome. The man's already long strides grew straighter less bedraggled. Openness pulled up on his face as he moved closer to her resting place. Bowing his head graciously to his alphess the man sat to her left, facing her. "How are you this fine day?"

Fiametta swallowed her laugh and silenced herself when she became aware of another's thoughts. Oh, how she loathed that ability of hers, the one to read minds. She truly hated intruding into someone else's mind, but, alas, it was a mechanical thing. It just happened without her wanting it to. She listened closely to the thoughts of the male, immediately recognizing his scent. It was definitely familiar, and warm, one that was soothing to her olfactories. She enjoyed the very smell of it as it wafted through the air.
She turned her blue gaze to her left, meeting the orange one of Reiko's. He was a fighter among her pack, and a good one. His ability to heal might not have been the strongest, but it was useful, especially with the position he held. She noticed his gait becoming slightly more graceful as he approached her resting place, taking his own right beside her and greeting her formally. "Hello, Reiko." She watched him curiously, wondering what it was he was doing so far from camp. Then again, she wondered what she was doing so far from camp.
Fiametta came up with her answer when he posed his question to her. She offered him a warm smile and turned her gaze to the glaciers again. "Not much. I'm just escaping the life of an Alphess for a moment or two, and taking the liberty to enjoy this sunlight. It's not something to come here everyday. What about you, Reiko?" She waited patiently for an answer, resisting the urge to read what he was thinking.
After all, she respected her packmates enough to try to stay out of their heads.

Show Me A Smile Baby
Face open, Reiko nodded to her greeting. Maybe it was a bit redundant of him but he had been raised to be mannerly and couldn't help the automatic response. Settling more comfortably into his spot now that his presence had been accepted the man turned ginger eyes to the side watching his alpha female. Her response worried him a little bit, the pinch of it catching his thoughts.
The life of alpha was hard enough when there were two, and here poor Fiametta was alone in the challenge. Why she had yet to acquire a mate was beyond him, she was a beautiful kind woman she did deserve it. Flicking his tail around robust haunches, Reiko turned to focus on the nicer bit of her sentence.
He had never been the kind to look into hardships, though he silently empathized with them. Such things were decided in his head and pressed aside. Reiko would give comfort only when he felt it was needed. At any other time it could be taken as an insult and after his long stint as a loner the man was unsure if now was one of those times.
Best to avoid it all together for the time being.
Him? He wasn't really up to anything, just walking. Enjoying the sun as she had said. The capture of a hare had been the most eventful bit of his morning and he told her so with a quiet murmur that was his usual manor of speaking. "Just a bit of hunting for me, like you said its a beautiful day. I didn't want to waste it guarding over the some what empty den like a creaky vulture" Mischief played in his eyes.
He really had been hovering around camp that morning, sucked to one end or the other as wolves left for the day. Being a fighter he had no real reason to be doing anything when there was no trouble brewing. That fact made him feel almost bad, after all look at Fia, who sat on top scrambling around on tired paws to make her pack powerful. Safe. And he was sitting on his tail like a sac of flour. So he'd gone off hunting, placing a hare at a pack mates feet after a couple hours and gone back out again.
To find Fiametta perched on a rock and utterly distracting his attentions from the task at hand.

Fiametta felt her stomach growl slightly at the mention of hunting, food. She gave herself a mental sigh, knowing she hadn't eaten since the day before. Perhaps, she would hunt herself when she was finished resting. She pushed back the sound of her gut and listened closer to what he was saying, trying very hard to keep her thoughts out of his. Although, the mind reading was truly an automatic thing and couldn't help but overhear the majority of his thoughts.
She growled, giving her head a shake. Realizing she must have confused him, she looked at him, disdain lacing her features. "I'm sorry, Reiko... Having the powers of mind reading makes me feel so intrusive, especially when I can't control it as well as I'd like to." Fiametta paused to release a sigh, closing her eyes for a moment to wash her worry away and clear her head. "Sometimes I wonder what others think of my mind reading power...but I never bother to check, nor does anyone bother to think about it. That's why I feel like I'm intruding all the time, learning everyone's deep dark secrets and what not..."
She trailed off, saying the last part more to herself than to him, but nonetheless, she was comfortable saying it out loud. She went back to her own mind to read over his thoughts, about her not taking a mate. She often wondered herself why she had yet to do such a thing, but it truly must have had to do with the fact that every male she's ever known belittled her only because she was a female. That was the way things worked in her previous pack, and she really hated it.
Fiametta wondered as well what it would be like to be in his position, a fighter in a pack that was ruled by a female. How different it must have been, not just for him either, but for her other pack members. She pondered the thought of how different her life was now compared to when she was younger. The four year old female noticed the differences almost immediately. She wondered what did it, her or the higher powers of the cosmos.
She chuckled, shaking her head a little, "I'm too curious for my own good."

Show Me A Smile Baby
Reiko for one had not expected to be given a key. He had pulled back slightly at her sudden anger, but after a moment had recognized that it was not directed at him. A gentle smile pulled up on his face, calm and easy despite the picking at his brain. Frankly he really didn't mind that, the mind reading. It was useful, and a good talent to have. A talent that could save you life and your face. Better then his messily gift, and then she could hear all of this couldn't she.
The smile turned into something more playful, with the glow of shared secrets. This however bothered her, and that thought provoked empathy in him. "There is no need to feel like that, Fiametta. You and I are the only ones here and I don't mind you in my head" His brow pulled up, an expression of welcome on his face. Reiko welcomed her openly. She could have whatever part of his mind she wished to have. It was his loyalty and a certain amount of gleaned friendship that allowed for this, and he held no qualms about such an invitation.
"Yours to take" he murmured, orange eyes playful behind the seriousness. Shoulders rolling, the man sat up straighter eyes locking on his alphess with utter seriousness. "I don't mind it, but if you can't control it you should practice. You can use me if you want." His head tilted to the side, eyes careful. It worried him that sadness in her voice. It upset her, and that upset him by proxy. Scooting a bit closer he tipped his head up to watch her.
"If you don't ask then you can't be upset about it. Im sorry to be rude about it but its the truth." Reiko looked back to the ice for a moment before turning from beauty to beauty. "Ask. Probe. Whats the worst that could happen?" Getting stabbed in the emotional hard spot. Damn he needed to think before he spoke. Fia was obviously pained by her gift, and it made him anxious. She shouldn't be hurt by something so apart of her.
The smile that pulled over her rested his fears a bit, and brought a warm one across his face where the past one had died into a thoughtful frown. Whatever was going on in the mind reader's head had brought up that smile, and he wondered over its occurrence. "There is no such thing as too much curiosity."

Her ears perked in interest. Use him? As practice? It would be more along the lines of a test subject. It wasn't that she had trouble probing into the thoughts of others, it was that she had trouble not doing it. She noticed him move closer to her and suddenly wanted to lean against him. Fiametta hesitated, then pressed her side to his, nuzzling his cheek as she spoke, "I appreciate the offer, but...it's not that I have problems getting into people's heads...I have problems staying out. It doesn't matter what I do, the thoughts of others are too loud for me to ignore."
Fiametta moved her nose away from his warm fur, stopping herself just to enjoy his presence and the feel of her side on his. It was comforting and calmed her down. She felt safe and...possibly attracted to him? It confused her and she wondered how he felt about her, but forced herself to not probe through his mind to find out. It was wrong and would most likely hurt her if she found out an answer she didn't like. There was no doubt she'd hide it, though. She was never one to reveal her own emotions unless it was called for.
Speaking of which, she moved on to her next question: "Why do you always smile? I know you're not that happy, so...why?" She locked her gaze with his, hoping to get a real answer without looking at his thoughts. She preferred it that way. Her ears went flat and her face contorted in pain almost as she refrained from entering his head again. She knew it was wrong of her, even when he thought she shouldn't be hurt when her power was so a part of her. Sure, it was useful, but it was also painful. Not because the voices were everywhere almost all the time, but because, when she heard others' thoughts, their pain and sorrow was burdened upon her shoulders.

Show Me A Smile Baby
A shock trembled through him at the touch. It was odd, that caress, a thing he was not at all accustom to. Even when his family had been together they had not been very much for physical contact, and this touch soaked into his being with the after taste of utter bliss. The words filtered to his ears, and with a sniff he turned to follow her retreating touch. Body set facing her now, Reiko frowned in seriousness. "A block then...? A shield?" He was aware that his intrusion may be seen as a bad thing, but it didn't stop him.
He wanted to help. He always wanted to help, but this was different. This was an emotional strain on a close friend, on a friend who seemed to be drawing closer to him... A thing he would not at all attempt to dissuade. She must have been fighting to control her gift for years, and Reiko would not blame her if she grew angry because of his rude intervention. But he would try and help. "You can still use me as a practice dummy. Whenever you want, okay? I'm here to help you" The brown man nodded his conviction, the words on his tongue warm and determined. It hurt him to see her so worried over something she could not control.
The smile pulled gently back onto his features before the next question, and it twisted into grim amusement at the irony there. The truth behind the smile hurt a little bit, but she had asked. The tear between wanting to tell and being afraid tot ell made him itch, twisting his body this way and that as the man chewed over a way to explain it without sounding mad. "My folks weren't very happy...After my sister passed away they refused to smile anymore" Large brown cloaked shoulders lifted and dropped. 'Someone had to be happy, for all of us." Pumpkin eyes looked away, sheepish and slightly pained.
He remembered those days all to well. Those long tired painful days. Raven had gone, mother and father had become distant. Half the time he couldn't feel his cheek's because they had gone numb under the constant strain of his muscle. Reiko puffed up his cheeks and looked back to his alpha, his friend. "'s just a habit I guess"

She frowned, a shield wouldn't be helpful with it. She wouldn't tell him that, however, she didn't want to put him down. She could tell how much he wanted to help her, how much he wanted to be her friend and do so. She was appreciative of the idea, but there really wasn't much he could do, even when he still offered to be her dummy. Mind reading was a hard thing to control, the blocking part. The only time it was not giving her grief was when she slept.
Fiametta listened closely to him, scanning over each word in his voice when he spoke of his family, how his sister passed away, how his parents didn't smile anymore. It reminded her so much of her parents, before they officially lost sanity. She remembered how her pack died, one by one, how her parents verbally abused her when her brother disappeared. She turned her head with flat ears and stared at the ice, the memories of how her mother had died--no...of how she let her mother die in that earthquake passed in front of her eyes. She remembered how she had every opportunity to save her, but never did.
The memory of the beta killing her father when she was asleep flashed in her mind. She knew what the beta planned on doing, but was too late to stop it when he finally made the move. She was too late to stop him from killing her father, but was there long enough to kill him so she could spend her father's last moments with him. She hated how she failed to protect him, failed to save her mother, and failed to go find her brother. She gave a sad sigh and fought the tears back, pushing the memories away.
Fiametta didn't look at him. "I...I'm sorry for what happened. If...If there's anything I can do to help you feel better, let me know." She wasn't quite there when she said it, but there were only so many things she could process at that moment. She steadily got to her feet, making a haste decision to leave. She stuttered, "I s-should go..." She went to jump from the stone, but slipped and slightly sliced her shoulder. She landed in the snow, but got back up and turned around, limping her way to go farther up the glaciers. She completely ignored the blood sticking to her inky fur.

His frame stiffened, eyes narrowing with worry. Reiko stood with her, ears pulling forward. Something was wrong. She spoke evenly at first but those words broke and stuttered, crashing into one another awkwardly. "Fiametta?" He stepped slowly towards her, jumping when she slipped. "Fiametta!" And yet she kept moving, limping now. He hurried after her, his bulk catching her hurt form quickly. "I'm sorry I didn't mean to upset you. Please-" He puffed, hurrying past her. "Please stop walking, your hurt. Come here, please"
Reiko shoved forward, kicking snow furiously out of the way in his bid to out pace her. Considering she was hurt and moving in pain he outpaced her quickly, a thing his robust form was unused to. One paw placed deftly before her followed by the large body, Reiko braced himself. If she were to stop then he would catch her, nose outstretched. If she rammed into him then he would catch her. Either way he was determined to pull her into him.
"Look, look at me. I'm sorry, okay?" Ginger eyes searched her face, flickering with fear. What had he done? He hadn't meant to honestly hadn't meant to upset her. What ever he had said seemed to have pulled something up that she didn't want to see. "Just let me fix your shoulder, and then Ill go. You can go back to your spot, okay Fia?" He watched her, ears pressed backward waiting for an answer.

Fiametta was aware that he was following her, trying to stop her. She tried to ignore his pleas and walked faster, but being injured obviously had its disadvantages. She was slightly slowed, angry with herself when he got in front of her. Of course, he stopped quickly and she didn't have much of a chance to stop herself before she collided with him head on. She did so on purpose, hoping to knock him back and being able to walk past him.
Well, she failed. She ran into him, but he was larger than her and basically caught her. She only managed to push him back a few inches, then ended up with her rump in the cold snow, in a sitting position with her muzzle buried in is chest. Fiametta hesitated when he asked her to look at him, but did so anyways, feeling so weak and pathetic. Some Alphess she was, seeming weak in front of another. She flattened her ears, listening to his unnecessary pleas and apologies.
What caught her attention most was when he said he'd leave after fixing her shoulder. She snapped, "No!" She paused, regaining her composure some. "No, please don't go... You didn't do anything wrong, Reiko, I...just overreacted to something. It's my fault, and I'm sorry." Fiametta offered him a small smile of comfort, but ti certainly wasn't making her feel any better. "You don't have to heal my shoulder, it's fine, really. And, please..." She begged. "Don't go." She had to admit that she really did enjoy his company.

She collided with him, her force shoving him backward slightly. Reiko's bulk was too great to be shoved away, however and he dug his paws into the dirt. Refusing to be shifted the man dropped his head, catching her own drawing her slightly forward before she ripped away form him. Pumpkin eyes watched her ears slick back with slight hurt, though determination flickered in them as well. Lips pulling back into a grimace the brown bodied animal stepped slightly back, rocking on his heels as he did so.
Jumping at her sudden outburst, Reiko pulled back even farther, face conflicted. Half of him wanted to show joy, after all she wanted him to stay, she didn't want him to go. The other half told him he was a horrible person for taking joy from her pain. Her fears. Ears turning backward in a peace offering the lower ranking wolf dropped his head, stepping towards her again. Whatever she said, he would be healing her shoulder. Drawing the illusive spark up into his frame the man gave a low relieved sigh.
Warmth, glorious golden warmth flooded his senses, and with a flickering stare he stepped up to his Alpha, nose reaching to brush her injury. Eyes sliding closed Reiko drew in the twining threads of joy coming from his gift and from the warmth of her body. Energy trembling under the excess usage, but muscles refusing to notice the man slid slowly, carefully along the scarlet line. He sensed more then felt the flesh close under his caress. In his mind's eye the skin arched back together, cells stitching, healing.
But it drew this magic from him, and with a heavy sigh the man slipped away, shaking his head hard. If one watched closely they could see the soft golden haze that fell from his jaws like breath on a cold winter day. It mixed with the mist already pooling from the open maw. Training in on the woman's sentences, Reiko pulled his head up to look Fiametta in the eye. "But I brought it up, Fia. I'm sorry, honestly. I didn't mean to hurt you." It was true that she had overreacted, but she deserved it. Wolves rarely did such things without reason.
Seating himself beside the woman's standing form Reiko let out a heavy grunt. The output hit him. Maybe he shouldn't have healed it past a scar. No mark would remain on her, and the power behind that had set his muscles twitching. "Didn't mean to use that much juice. It's pretty pathetic huh? Need to work on that" Smiling openly at the black alpha, Reiko shuffled about to face her. "But it was worth it, I think." Playful eyes bounced across Fiametta's face.

With worried aqua eyes, she watched him as he silently moved forward, trailing his nose across her shoulder. She twitched slightly, her entire pelt moving, but remained motionless as she felt the cut heal slowly. She saw the golden mist drift from his mouth and wondered what it was. Soon, however, he was finished and the wound had been healed. She envied him for such a useful ability, unlike her annoying one.
Fiametta was much too wrapped up in how close to her he was. She greatly enjoyed the feeling and was almost sad when he moved away from her. The tingling feeling was still lingering in her paws and her pelt felt hotter than the sun at the moment. She stared at him as he went to sit beside her, obviously tired. She knew this, not by his thoughts, but by the way his muscles trembled. She almost felt bad when he stated he used too much energy. She frowned, wanting to yell at herself, "I'm so sorry, Reiko... I didn't mean for you to push yourself that far. You didn't hurt me either...it was my own mind reminding me of something I honestly would have preferred to forget."
Fiametta flattened her ears even further than she had done already and moved closer to him, wanting to be a good Alphess and comfort her packmate. She sat beside him and pressed her side to his again, turning her head to rest her forehead on his cheek. "It's not pathetic, Reiko... It was wonderful and talented, much better than mine." She paused and listened to him further, smiling at him. "I am glad it was worth it to you, but there was really no need. I suppose...I should tell you what I overreacted to."
She debated on whether or not to really tell him about it. She closed her eyes and dug her forehead further into his cheek. "It has to do with my past... As you spoke of your sister dying, it reminded me of what happened to my family. I should tell you...for it's only fair, because you told me yours." Fiametta sighed, mentally preparing herself to tell him all of what had happened to her when she was younger. Of the disappearance of her brother, the death of her pack, and of the mate she was supposed to have. None of that ended well, but she didn't care. Reiko deserved to know, only because she hadn't told anyone else of the pack yet.
