It was simple enough for Dathne to determine that these lands were seldom inhabited. The scents that were most prominent were those of prey type animals, little rodent critters as well as a few larger ones who had become isolated from the main lands. The sea that surrounded the island on three sides made it a trying task for anyone to leave if the waters weren’t just right over the strip of sandy bridge that connected the Outer Realm with the rest. It made the island prime territory for hunting with so few going so far out of their way to visit it. Hoping to scope out the forests and possibly find herself a decent location to hunt later—she had just finished her morning meal not so very long ago—the gray wolf padded along up the bank, across the sandy, shore, and straight into the woods.
A few hours later, perhaps when it was nearing midday, she began to reconsider her decision to run headlong into the forest. It hadn’t taken any time at all for her to become lost and to even lose her sense of time within the shaded confines of the trees. She paused amid the heavy shrubbery, tilting her head back to stare skyward with squinted, golden-purple eyes, but to find little help there. With the sun nearing its peak it was near impossible to discern which direction was which. “Well, you’ve done it now, Dath,” she scolded herself, letting her large gray ears tip back and rest sourly against her furry head. Her brows puckered down over her eyes and her bottom lip protruded slightly in a pouting fashion, resuming her earlier pace with begrudging steps.
She had barely gone ten feet when a loud commotion ahead froze her in her tracks. The leaves rattled loudly and echoed amidst the foliage, a branch somewhere swaying against its neighbors. Eyes having gone wide with a slight start, she stared above where she could vaguely make out the branch as it settled back into place and the relative silence of the forest descended over everything again. Forcing herself to relax, she glanced around, noting nothing to cause alarm and had to assume some large bird had taken flight from the branch to cause it to move as it had. “Guess I’m not the only one here,” she murmured aloud to herself and hoping she was right. What else could have caused the loud rustle if not but another creature? Eyes still shifting, the wolf lowered her head and took up sniffing at the ground as she traveled, hoping to come across a scent of something that might later be of interest.
